Taste: Dark fruit – dates and raisins – plus some honey and cream. There’s also some vegetal grass, maple syrup and smooth oak. Nose: Great fruit notes, particularly dried fruits and a strong berry presence. And, if it means anything, I’ve become quite a big fan. Visitors to the distillery are given one free dram every month at the Jura pub for the rest of their lives. If you get an opportunity to visit the distillery, don’t pass it up. – It’s the former home of George Orwell, and it’s apparently where he wrote 1984 – The island has just one road, one pub and of course the distillery (but, really, what more could you need?) – The island only contains about 200 people, but more than 5,000 deer And it’s known for handful of interesting facts. The Jura Distillery is found on the small island of Jura, between Islay and Campbeltown, off the south-western coast of Scotland. And while the whisky itself is definitely interesting, I was perhaps even more fascinated by where this stuff comes from. It’s a great mixture of fruity and earthy notes with a distinct and deep nose. I recently had the opportunity to taste Isle of Jura 16 Year Old, and I quite liked it. For me Jura suffers the same problem as Bowmore where I find myself liking NDP bottlings of it more than just about anything the distillery itself puts out. Samaroli Isle of Jura 16 years is a great example of Silvan S. Light bodied, it has a simple and easy texture with almost no burn Well balanced with malt, spice and wood keeping the sweetness in check. Med-long and malt heavy with notes of fruit, vanilla, ash and oak. If it were to stop at that it would be cloying and overly sweet, but luckily some notes of salty brine, whisky spice and wood to even things out and create a multi-faceted flavor. There is a nice subtle backing of malt, vanilla and a slight floral character with a gentle sweetness moving beneath it all.Ī nice tasty malt, dried fruit, red licorice, yellow cake and vanilla frosting slide effortlessly across the palate.

Price: $180 Samaroli Isle of Jura 16 years ReviewĬrisp green apples, warm gooey honey, sweet ripe apricots and ripe pears start things off. Combine cherry / unique casks with the fact that they often re-cask and finish the whiskies themselves and you’re getting something you literally can’t get from anyone else. This is why a bottle of Samaroli costs so much more than most other NDPs. Located in Italy he traveled to Scotland, made friends and forged partnerships with distilleries that, to this day, give him and his company access to the most cherry and unique casks many distilleries have. Samaroli began his career in 1968 and was the first non-Scottish NDP of Scottish single malts. There is a character in this bottle that I have yet to find in other Juras and I’m actually able to call it a good whisky, which is something I was beginning to think I’d never get say about another Jura.įor those not familiar with Samaroli, Mr. In fact outside of their peated “mistake” whisky (distilled 1996), this is my favorite Jura. It showed me that Jura can indeed create some mighty tasty whisky. This Samaroli Isle of Jura 16 years is a vatting of two different casks of Jura whisky that were distilled in ’97, bottled in ’13 and combined is something of a revelation to me.
